December 2014 Ringing News

Greetings from Area 9!

I am so excited about the new events now open for registration and about those to be announced soon. The Area 9 Board has been busy arranging and organizing two new Spring Rings to join our longstanding Central Texas Spring Ring – West Texas Spring Ring in Lubbock and Oklahoma Spring Ring in Oklahoma City. Our goal is to provide a variety of different events to enhance ringing experiences and skill. All three events are currently on the web site and open for registration.

I have recently agreed to bring handbells back into my home church here in Lake Jackson, TX. The bells have been absent from worship for several years and have been one of those unused bell sets. Rather than the traditional 13 ringers rehearsing once a week and participating in worship once a month, I am going to try a new approach. We began playing on All Saint’s Sunday with singing bells stationed all around the sanctuary. The bells begin to sing as the names of our members who passed away during the last year were read. The sanctuary filled with the sound of bells creating a feeling of a cloud of witnesses surrounding the congregation.

I have talked about bells to many people and have heard various responses – “I used to do that” or “I couldn’t ever do that” and the popular “it sounds great.” My response has been that everyone can participate in some way. On All Saint’s Sunday, my family and the Sanctuary Choir were the singers of the bells. I gave one quick lesson to both the family and the Choir and convinced them that they could ring bells!

I love to conduct! Do I want to have a traditional five-octave choir ringing regularly? Yes. However, I am looking outside my traditional box to look for more opportunities for more people to have their hands on bells and have the experience and excitement of ringing.

Join me in my own personal journey stepping out of my box to bring handbells back into use and to bring the art of handbells to a larger body of people!

Keep a song in your heart!

Handbell Musician Resources

The Handbell Musicians of America Resource Library offers a large and growing collection of articles, interactive PDFs, PowerPoint webinars, videos, and more to help you expand your knowledge as a handbell musician. All Handbell Musicians of America resources are available exclusively to our members. They are divided into Educational, Community, and Worship categories, but most groups will find valuable resources in all three categories.

These resources were created as a result of the New Initiatives Project launched in 2010. We are continually seeking new resources to add to the list. Learn more about this phase of the project and submit your own proposal for a new resource.
